Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ đơn (Simple Past Tense) thường dựa vào các từ hoặc cụm từ chỉ thời gian trong quá khứ hoặc ngữ cảnh của câu. Dưới đây là một số dấu hiệu phổ biến:

Các từ chỉ thời gian trong quá khứ:

Yesterday (hôm qua): "She visited her grandma yesterday."
Last (tuần trước, tháng trước, năm trước, v.v.): "We went to the park last Sunday."
Ago (cách đây): "They moved to this city two years ago."
In [năm]: "He was born in 2000."
When (khi, thường đi với mệnh đề phụ): "When I was a child, I loved playing outside."
Các trạng từ chỉ tần suất trong quá khứ:

Once (một lần): "He once lived in Japan."
Often (thường xuyên): "She often visited her grandparents when she was young."
Never (không bao giờ): "I never met him before."
Cụm từ chỉ thời gian cụ thể trong quá khứ:

The day before yesterday (ngày hôm kia): "I met her the day before yesterday."
[Số] days/weeks/months/years ago (cách đây [số] ngày/tuần/tháng/năm): "They got married three years ago."
Các câu chuyện, sự kiện đã xảy ra trong quá khứ:

Khi kể lại một câu chuyện hoặc sự kiện đã kết thúc: "Once upon a time, there was a princess who lived in a castle."
Những từ và cụm từ này thường xuất hiện trong câu sử dụng thì quá khứ đơn, giúp nhận diện thì này dễ dàng hơn.

Last weekend, my family and I went to the countryside. We left early in the morning to avoid the traffic.
