LIFE IN THAILAND – THEN AND NOW

Family life in Thailand has changed significantly over the years. In the past, families were often large with several generations, close bonds and strong ties of support. Children usually lived with their parents even until they had a job. Members in these extended families relied on each other for emotional and financial support, and the importance of family unity was valued above all. Life was simpler, and many people focused on providing the necessities of life, while luxuries were rare. The community played an essential role in daily life, and families depended on each other to get around, share resources and face challenges together.

In recent years, as urbanisation has increased, it has become more common for young people to move away for work or education, which has led to more independent lifestyles. This shift has made family ties more fragile, and it is rare for children to live with their parents once they are adults. Modern families now invest in improving their living conditions, prioritising comfort and material goods. Plus, luxuries such as cars and electronics are more accessible. Over time, the government has also worked hard to improve families’ access to education and healthcare.
